jim is in that area right now. jim, is there a sense that the danger has passed? >> reporter: there's a sense that they faced down the destruction that has been caused. they've now seen those images that you showed, you saw the faces of those evacuees, what they've been through. there are still dangers looming out there, a long way to go. the gas lines you were talking about are still a challenge in some areas. some residents challenging why they haven't been cut off much earlier. and there's hopes that that can be done today. not as easy as it sounds. gaining access to where they can cut off these lines still will leave some of those lines pressurized. there's still a potential threat there. of course, before they can reenergize any of the electric lines in some of these communities, they have to ensure that job is done, carol. otherwise, it could ignite new fires. there's one of the major risks that remains. there are still some people that are holding out, some elderly with their pets, but they're about to give it up. there's no electricity. there's no prospect

jim clancy is there. jim, you talked to the mayor of bellmawr. how are things going? >> reporter: i'm just looking right now. amazing scene as front loaders are dumping sand, taking away from the residents' homes and taking it to the beach where it used to be, working on this, and i'm talking about dozens of trucks, dozens of bulldozers in order to push the sand back to try to reclaim her city and its famous boardwalk that has now totally destroyed, completely ripped up by hurricane sandy. this is a small town of about 6,000 people. about 60,000, though, in the summer months. this town is a bowl, and it collects water. as a result medical record to recover from this, it got to save the flooded homes missed the town by pumping that water out. there's massive pumps that are working on it. some of it were deployed during katrina. they're pumping hundreds of thousands of gallons out of two lakes that are inside, and, therefore, draining that interior bowl. the word today is really reconstruction, and they are tackling this aggressively. tell me where all the sand goes. do
